Rosalind could hardly believe that he was the same man with whom she had grown so terribly angry; the same man whose cynicism seemed to bleed from his very core.

As the Duke reached out and gently laid a hand on his sister’s shoulder, Rosalind felt her breath catch in her throat. Could he really be so tender a man after all? And if he was, did that mean that he did not really mean to provoke her with his words, but rather guide her?

Rosalind shook her head as if the movement would do something to order her thoughts a little better. When she turned to look back towards the Rutherfords, Rosalind was horrified to find that the Duke was now studying her in kind. Immediately she felt her cheeks flush and her mouth drop open a little. Hoping he had not perceived her own study of him and his family, Rosalind turned to look in another direction. However, knowing that his eyes were upon her, Rosalind could not help but turn back to look at him. It was almost as if some invisible force were drawing her, and there was not a thing she could do about it. Once again, she met his eyes, and he gave her the very briefest of smiles. For a moment, Rosalind was frozen; they had not parted on good terms, and Rosalind was unsure whether the smile was a genuine one. After a moment, she smiled back as graciously as she could, and gave the Duke an almost imperceptible nod.
